Taken from previous-year papers. If a pattern is marked "very common", expect to see it in your exam.
Turning arrow

Write the direction in each picture.
Find the turn each time, then turn once more.
An arrow points: up, up-right, right, down-right. What comes next?
Up → up-right → right → down-right
Each step turns 45° clockwise
Next: down-right + 45° clockwise

Dot moving round the border
very commonA dot or shape sits at a different border spot in every picture.
Number the 8 border spots clockwise from the top-left corner: 0 to 7.
Find the step and add it.
A dot is on border spot 0, 2, 4, 6 in four pictures. Where is it in the next picture?
Spots: 0 = top-left corner, 1 = top middle, 2 = top-right corner, and so on clockwise
The dot moves 2 spots each time
Next = 6 + 2 = 8, which is spot 0
Answer: Top-left corner
Shaded part moving
commonA shaded quarter moves to a different place in each picture.
Note the quarter in each picture.
Find the direction (clockwise or anticlockwise) and continue.
A square has one shaded quarter: top-left, then top-right, then bottom-right, then bottom-left. Which quarter is shaded next?
Top-left → top-right → bottom-right → bottom-left

Two rules together
commonThe shading, the arrow and other parts all change from picture to picture.
Solve one part at a time.
The answer must follow every rule.
Picture 1: top-left shaded, arrow up. Picture 2: bottom-left shaded, arrow right. Picture 3: bottom-right shaded, arrow down. What is picture 4?
Shading: top-left → bottom-left → bottom-right, going anticlockwise, so next is top-right
Arrow: up → right → down, turning 90° clockwise each time, so next is left

Growing count
very commonThe number of strokes or marks goes up by the same amount each time.
Write the counts in a row.
Find the step and add it once more.
The number of strokes in the pictures is 1, 3, 5. How many strokes come next?
Counts: 1, 3, 5
Step: +2 each time
Next = 5 + 2
Answer: 7
Dots added at corners
commonOne new dot appears at the next corner in each picture.
Follow the corners in order.
Add the next corner's dot to the ones already there.
Picture 1 has a dot at top-left. Picture 2 has dots at top-left and top-right. Picture 3 has dots at top-left, top-right and bottom-right. What is picture 4?
A new dot is added each time, going clockwise
The next corner is bottom-left
All four corners now have a dot
Answer: 4 dots, one in every corner
Count plus another rule
commonThe count changes, and another part (like an arrow) also changes.
Extend the count and the other change separately.
