Olympic basics

The modern Olympics began at Athens in 1896. Pierre de Coubertin revived them.

  • The IOC (International Olympic Committee) was founded in 1894. Its HQ is at Lausanne.
  • The motto is "Citius, Altius, Fortius - Communiter". It means faster, higher, stronger - together.
  • "Communiter" (together) was added in 2021.
  • The symbol is five interlocking rings.

  • 1900 Paris: India's first Olympics. Norman Pritchard won two athletics silvers.
  • Hockey: eight Olympic golds. The run began at 1928 Amsterdam. The last gold came at 1980 Moscow.
  • Abhinav Bindra: first individual Olympic gold, 2008, 10 m air rifle.
  • Neeraj Chopra: javelin gold at the Tokyo Games.
  • Cricket World Cup: first win in 1983 under Kapil Dev at Lord's. Second in 2011 under M.S. Dhoni.

How to note a tournament

Write one line per event in your window.

A statement question usually swaps one item in this line. It is most often a wrong host city or a wrong champion. The other items stay true.

Watch: Check each statement alone. One false detail makes that statement wrong, even if the rest is true.

How to spot it:

Method

  1. Recall the cup and sport pairs: Thomas and Uber badminton, Davis tennis, Santosh football, Ranji cricket, Durand football.

  2. Recall organisers: IPL is BCCI; Asian Games is the OCA.

  3. Look for the option with a swapped sport.

Why it works:

The wrong option is usually a real cup placed under the wrong sport.

Mistakes to avoid

Where most students lose marks on this subtopic.

Mistake 01

Mixing the two-year T20 World Cup with the four-year ODI World Cup.

T20 is every two years. ODI is every four years.
